I have a curious story that illustrates well, at the same time, the importance of credibility and reputation and the danger of disinformation, especially in the times we live in, enchanted without filters by the “artificial revolution.”
Between 2000 and 2001, all the members of my band – Urbanature – decided to create a multimedia agency with the same name.
One of our projects, supported by Microsoft Portugal, was Estuda.net, a portal dedicated to higher education.
Incredibly enough, the competition was vast and strong. We monitored each other daily, hour by hour.
On April 1st, 2001, April Fools’ Day, Estuda.net published a fake news story written by me.
The headline was: “Portuguese Empirical University inaugurated.”
In the subheadline, it read: “School of Life welcomes 5,500 students.”
The text, absolutely ridiculous and surreal, said the following:
“The city of Porto has, as of today, a new University. The Portuguese Empirical University (UEP), with top-quality facilities, is the new higher-education institution created for ‘all those who understand that, in these times, nothing beats the school of life,’ says Ricardo Broupa, rector of the UEP. For now, 5,500 students are enrolled in 8 degree programmes offered by the institution – Automobile Park Management, At-Home Public Relations, Limit-Problem Administration, Tax-Evasion Management, Female Resource Management, Rhetorical Engineering, Mathematical Law and Mediterranean Alcohol Studies. Estuda.net knows that the UEP is contacting members of the political class to, in the future, structure the team of lecturers who will take charge of postgraduate and master’s programmes, as well as ‘the later establishment of a Portuguese Empirical Order,’ adds Ricardo Broupa.”
Up to this point, all was fine.
It was relatively easy to realise that a degree for car-park attendants would be absurd. And with subjects like “Automobile Park Management” and “Tax-Evasion Management,” how could anyone believe this story?
But the problem is that one of our competitors took our article as true and decided to rewrite it and publish it as if it were real.
When we detected our rival’s serious mistake, we laughed for hours and days.
After so much laughter, we ended up sending them an email revealing how ridiculous the situation was and lamenting the plagiarism.
Our reputation rose, and our competitor’s plummeted.
Nowadays, this problem from 2001 has resurfaced – and increasingly so.
We need more regulation regarding how large language models appropriate copyright-protected content and replicate it in altered ways, without the fine sensitivity that only we can bring to human communication.

No dia 1 de Abril de 2001, Dia das Mentiras, o Estuda.net publicou uma notícia falsa, por mim escrita.
O título era o seguinte: “Universidade Empírica Portuguesa inaugurada.”
No póstítulo, lia-se “Escola da Vida recebe 5500 alunos.”
O texto, absolutamente ridículo e surreal, dizia o seguinte:
“A cidade do Porto conta, a partir de hoje, com uma nova Universidade. A Universidade Empírica Portuguesa (UEP), com instalações de superior qualidade, é a nova instituição de ensino superior, criada para ‘todos aqueles que entendem que não há como a escola da vida para os tempos que correm,’ refere Ricardo Broupa, reitor da UEP. Para já, estão inscritos 5500 alunos em 8 licenciaturas ministradas pelo estabelecimento – Gestão do Parque Automóvel, Relações Públicas no Domicílio, Administração de Problemas-limite, Administração de Fugas Fiscais, Gestão de Recursos Femininos, Engenharia Retórica, Direito Matemático e Alcoologia Mediterrânea. O Estuda.net sabe que a UEP está a contactar elementos da classe política para, futuramente, estruturar a equipa de docentes que se encarregará das pós-graduações e mestrados, bem como ‘da constituição posterior de uma Ordem Empírica Portuguesa,’ adianta Ricardo Broupa.”
Até aqui, tudo bem.
Era relativamente fácil perceber que um curso para arrumador de carros seria absurdo. E com cadeiras como “Gestão do Parque Automóvel” e “Administração de Fugas Fiscais”, como seria possível acreditar nesta história?
Mas o problema é que um dos nossos concorrentes tomou a nossa notícia como boa e decidiu reescrevê-la e publicá-la como se fosse verdadeira.
Quando detectámos o erro grave do nosso rival, rimo-nos durante horas e dias.
No final de tanta gargalhada, acabámos por enviar-lhes um email a revelar o ridículo da situação e a lamentar o plágio.
A nossa reputação subiu e a do nosso concorrente caiu a pique.
Hoje em dia, este problema do ano 2001 volta a colocar-se e cada vez mais.
Precisamos de mais regulação para a forma como os modelos de linguagem de grande escala se apropriam de conteúdos protegidos por direitos de autor e os replicam de forma alterada, sem a sensibilidade fina que apenas nós conseguimos conferir à comunicação humana.
